The History of Holston River Valley Starts Here

The Holston River Valley is quiet, peaceful and serene. It is blessed with hills and valleys, rivers and lakes, woodlands and grasslands that extend from the cities of Abingdon and Damascus in Virginia southward to Bristol, Johnson City and Kingsport in Tennessee. It is against these beautiful backdrops of nature that our museum tells the story of how people throughout Holston River Valley have grown together.

The Museum

Our exhibits will guide the visitor along a timeline of history. It begins with early Indian tribes who first lived off these lands. Then, during the 1500’s, European explorers began to enter the region and they were followed by the arrival of new settlers. Sometimes the blending of differing lifestyles caused conflicts – Indians against Indians – Indians against Europeans – Europeans against Europeans – Union States against Confederate States – and so on into modern times. As the visitor continues along the timeline of these events, our collection of artifacts, photographs and narratives help give meaning to how our culture and heritage have evolved.
